New floors…

I know I’m terrible about updating now, but since we actually did something new to the house I guess it’s time to stop being so slack! We decided to pull up the carpet in the living/dining rooms and down both hallways in order to put down hardwood floors. The dogs were absolutely killing the living room carpet since they have the doggie door and essentially one big mud pit for a back yard.

We (and by we, I really mean Tim) installed the floors ourselves. Here is a picture account of the process, which was a really big PITA:

First, Tim had to tear up the old hardwoods in the little mini-foyer. They were glued to the floor by much more glue than was necessary, and it was TERRIBLE trying to get all of the glue up:

Then, Tim ripped up all of the carpet. That was much easier. The baseboards were a serious pain, though, because our builder also used much more CAULK than was necessary and we ended up having to buy new baseboards in the end. It’s ok; Cocoa had left teeth marks in a lot of them anyway.
Oh yeah. We painted the hallway as well. I thought it was a good time to do it, since we had no baseboards to tape and we didn’t care if the carpet was ruined.
The guy who sold us the flooring gave us upgraded padding for free. Bobo & Cocoa kept laying on it all day long. We had to roll it out all over the floor.
The beginning. Tim assigned me to glue cleaning duty. I cleaned glue between the joints with a damp cloth, dried it, then used painter’s tape in several places between every joint (this was a tip from the floor guy).
In progress…
Bobo approved. Cocoa was kind of scared of the floor, so she stayed outside most of the weekend. When she came in, she refused to leave the kitchen.
Day 1 done. We finished the living room on the first day, and just had to complete the hallway on the second day. Both of us were really sore.

Here is what the living room looked like after I took the tape off. Pretty!

I don’t have any pictures of the house once the furniture is moved back in, because Tim went out of town and the furniture is still scattered all over the house! I’ll update again with better pictures soon 🙂

Sorry for the lack of updates…

I haven’t updated in a while, but our dogs update their blog more frequently – http://boboandcocoa.blogspot.com/.
We (and by we, I mean Tim) painted another portion of the living room. It is a neutral beige color, with just a tiny hint of orange so it looks great with the orange accent wall.
We hung a few more pictures, and had to rearrange the dining area to make room for Cocoa’s crate. Tim has also had to do a bunch of damage control because Cocoa has a destructive streak. He’s had to reconstruct a window sill corner, replace dry wall tape near the bay window (not to mention patch & sand some areas), and putty & sand several spots on the baseboards. Hopefully she’ll get through this soon!
Cocoa has also dug a trench pretty much all the way around the house. It would be obnoxious if she wasn’t so darn cute. She also likes to dig, get really dirty, then come through the doggie door and get dirt all over the kitchen and living room. Nice.
Our next project (after we finish painting the living room and hallway) will likely be flooring. We’d like to pull up the carpet in the living room/dining/hallway and put down hardwood laminate flooring. Hardwoods would be nice, but the dogs would likely damage it and it isn’t necessary at our neighborhood’s price point. It would definitely make the house look more modern and polished.
New toys: we’ve already exchanged Christmas presents. Tim now has a PS3, but I haven’t taken any pictures. I must admit that I enjoy it as well – I like watching movies on blu-ray. Tim let me get my first digital SLR camera. I’ve been eyeing it for a while because I really want to learn how to use one. I started with a base model Nikon – the D40. I need to pick up a memory card, and then I’ll post some pictures in my next update.

Slideshow…

We don’t have a lot of updates to the house to make note of. We’re about to paint the other half of the living room a color called “Weathered Sandstone”. It’s kind of a beige color with warm undertones that will look nice with the orange. I also bought several frames to hang wedding pictures, so once those are up I’ll take a few pictures.
Here is a slideshow that I made a long time ago, but I never posted it. It takes us through the groundbreaking of the house all the way to closing:

Storm Door…

We’ve wanted a storm door for a while b/c we like the look and thought it would be nice to have some extra light in the house. Plus, the dogs peek out the side window so we thought they would enjoy a better view.
We bought a door from Lowe’s and had them come out to install it today. Unfortunately we had to have a “build-out” because of our side window so we were charged more for the install. We really like the result, though. We bought black to bring the color of the shutters to the other side of the house. I’ll get a picture from across the street soon to show how it all ties in together.

House updates…

We had a productive weekend! First of all, we found a nice ceiling fan to replace our plain white one in the living room. Tim is in love with this fan, especially because it puts out a lot more cool air! We moved the white one to the spare bedroom.
We also painted! We finished both the kitchen and an accent wall in the living room. Here is the work when it was in progress:
And here is the finished product!

We (well, Tim) also decided to hang some of our sconces & frames so the walls are no longer so bare. Action shot:

Sconces in the dining area:

Shadow Boxes above the entertainment center. Those random items are just temporary – we’ll get nicer vases or something to put inside. Excuse the clutter of frames!

I had to get the fan in a shot:
Our kitchen art looks much better with the orange wall!

Warning! Too many detail pictures ahead!
New spare bathroom items:

And in the Master, we have a new wall cabinet:

New hamper:

New shower caddy (this on was really cool b/c it was adjustable!)We now have a curved shower rod above the garden tub. There is suddenly a LOT more space inside the shower!

New stainless items for the Master bath. We have a new stainless trash can too, but I didn’t take a picture of it.

Next project: Paint!

Next on the list: painting. I think houses look so much more like home when they’re painted, so I’m eager to get some color on the walls. I hate the actual ACT of painting the walls, but it will be worth it when it’s done. We’ve picked a nice orange color for the kitchen area (and accent wall in the living room). I think it will look great with the cherry cabinets, and we found an orange that brings out a color in our kitchen artwork. Now, I must start taping…

Getting used to each other…

Bobo & Cocoa are starting to hang out a little more. In general, she wants to be around him (or us) constantly, and he makes it clear that he thinks she is a little annoying. I noticed yesterday that he initiated more contact with her. In this case, she was chewing on her Kong toy, and he went outside to lay next to her:
They were just chilling together here:
Here, she scooted over until she was up against his back, but he didn’t get up and move.

I can tell she really wants to be accepted, and because Bobo is such a passive dog he will tolerate anything. However, I really think that over time he will enjoy having her around, especially once she is bigger than him. Most of his close dog friends are bigger than him, and they play really rough – he loves it!
As for the house in general, our next project is going to be painting. We’ve pretty much decided on the colors for the kitchen & accent wall in the living room, the spare bath, and the spare bedroom. I just need a color that will span most of the house (living room, hallway), the other spare bedroom, and the master bath. The house will look really nice when it isn’t all white!
I’ll post pictures of the spare bathroom when I put up the new decor.
